3M MPro130 in April 2010?

We travel far and wide through the rumour mill of new Office Products.  We speculate and have heard through the grapevive that the future release of the 3M M Pro130 will have a few new features.  One being that you will see the addition of a SD memory card slot.  Now you will be able to load your presentation on the SD memory card and carry your new 3M M Pro130 projector all in one device.  Yep, no Laptop or Netbook neccessary. How simple is that!  Additional feature number two for the 3M MPro130, longer battery life, a must for those all day trade shows or the road warrior that is doing multiple sales presentations in a day.  We are not too sure about this last feature, but what if the 3M MPro 130 projector could hook up to your Apple iPhone or Google Android phone.  A phone that can do your presentation also?  What's next?

What's a SkyDrive?

Microsoft Office 2010 has a couple of new features that can be very useful. New "Save As" functions. The first "Save As", now you can save a file as a PDF file. But the best feature is Microsoft's Cloud computing, which is called SkyDrive.

From Microsoft site:

Well, as file sizes have grown, so have the options for file storage. You can use a USB flash drive to store large files, and take them with you, but flash drives can be lost or damaged just like an old floppy. Luckily, Windows Live SkyDrive solves these problems. It's like a flash drive on the Internet. This storage solution is a lot harder to damage than the flash drive lying around your desk or getting crushed in your bag, and you can't forget it at the office or lose it. Plus, it's free!

When you store your files on SkyDrive, you can access them from virtually anywhere. It's a fast and easy way to work on a file both from home and at work, without transporting it back and forth. You can also sign in to SkyDrive from a friend's computer, or at an Internet café or library, and work with your files.

Imagine taking a trip to your mom's house and being able to show her your favorite photos (up to 25 GB). You can save all the photos she wants on her computer for her, or you can set up a special shared folder just for the two of you to swap future photos in. To access the files, she just needs a Windows Live ID.

With SkyDrive, you can create three different types of folders that can be accessed from the Internet (these folders are stored on a server that is managed by Microsoft):

•Personal folders that can be accessed only by you.

•Shared folders that you can set up to be accessed by the people you want to share your files with.

•Public folders that anyone on the Internet can access.

How perfect, special permissions on who can see what files, work from a different computers, and best yet easily transfer large files with out having to zip and send by email.

Top 10 Ways To Save on Office Supplies

Suprisingly the number one expense in office supplies is.....?  We will tell you at the of this post.

Here are some tips you can use to cut costs in purchasing and maintaining office supplies:

Duplex or Double sided printing - where possible print on both sides of the paper. This has the potential to reduce spending on printing paper by a maximum of 50%.

Set printer preference to "low" quality - This helps to reduce the cost in ink or toner for projects that do not require high quality print outs.

Buying in Bulk
- Most office supply stores will offer competitive discounted on buying in large quantities.

Online Documents - Customize your documents to be signed online where possible. This minimizes the use of paper.

Online Collaboration
- Use Google Docs or Windows Live for sharing and editing files instead of printing documents.

Centralize your inventory - Take inventory of all the office supplies you have available right now and transfer them to central locations where they can be easily found. So by ensuring that there are adequate supplies in your central inventory and keep that restocked, there is less reason for members of your staff to hoard.

Learn when to buy
- Office Supply Stores have peak seasons and off seasons. Usually, office supply stores will offer discounts, rebates or sales on supplies during the summer months, so try to stock up on what you need before you have to pay full price. On the other hand, paper suppliers tend to try to raise prices during the early months of the year, and if you use a lot of paper, you may avoid price increases by purchasing a year’s supply in December.

Compare Toners to Toners - Some suppliers will offer inferior goods at a slight discount. Most likely, you will not be satisfied with these goods and they will not reflect well on your business. By shopping multiple sources, you will often be able to find quality goods at the same or lower price than the inferior ones.

Recycle - You can save yourself a lot of money by recycling. Instead of tossing the used ink cartridges, take them to an ink-refilling company.  You can even sell your spent cartridges.

Recycle - You can save additional money by recycling paper. Instead of tossing the junk faxes, re-use the paper for meeting notes.

Compare Office Supplies Prices - We built a free to to compare Office Depot to Office Max prices at one - all for free -

The number one expense in the business for office supplies is - Paper, then Toner or Ink

So check it out, was is the number one expense in your office for supplies?

Cisco makes recommended cash offer to acquire TANDBERG for $3 billion

Cisco Systems Inc. announced Thursday a definitive agreement for Cisco to launch a recommended voluntary cash offer to acquire TANDBERG.

TANDBERG, based in Oslo, Norway, and New York, is a provider of video communications, including a range of video endpoint and network infrastructure solutions with intercompany and multi-vendor interoperability. With this proposed acquisition, Cisco will expand its collaboration portfolio to offer more solutions to a larger number of customers, further accelerating market adoption globally.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cisco will commence a cash tender offer to purchase all the outstanding shares of TANDBERG for 153.5 Norwegian Kroner per share for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $3.0 billion. This represents an 11.0 percent premium to the previous day closing price of TANDBERG's stock, and a 25.2 percent premium to the three-month volume weighted average closing price for TANDBERG's stock. The proposal was recommended unanimously by TANDBERG's board of directors.

The acquisition is expected to close during the first half of calendar year 2010, though the close date is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory review in the United States and elsewhere. Cisco expects the acquisition to be accretive to Cisco's non-GAAP earnings in fiscal year 2011.

TANDBERG's 1,500 employees globally, with innovation centers in Norway and the United Kingdom, will be important as Cisco's team continues to drive video innovation and growth. Upon completion of the transaction, TANDBERG's CEO Fredrik Halvorsen will lead the new TelePresence Technology Group, reporting to Marthin De Beer, senior vice president of Cisco's Emerging Technologies Group.
"Cisco and TANDBERG have remarkably similar cultures and a shared vision to change the way the world works through collaboration and video communications technologies," said Cisco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, John Chambers. "Collaboration is a $34 billion market and is growing rapidly -- enabled by networked Web 2.0 technologies. This acquisition showcases Cisco's financial strength and ability to quickly capture key market transitions for growth."

“Cisco and TANDBERG share a vision of changing the way people communicate and collaborate," said TANDBERG Chief Executive Officer, Fredrik Halvorsen. "This transaction is a vote of confidence, not just in TANDBERG but in our technology and our people. The combination of world-class technologies, Cisco's global scale, and exceptional people from both organizations will enable us to accelerate innovation and market adoption."

Cisco's collaboration vision is to enable a sustainable, new level of enterprise productivity, agility and innovation by transforming the way people interact, share knowledge and deliver productive outcomes within and across organizations. TelePresence and high-quality video have redefined how users communicate through high-quality video experiences, and are becoming a larger segment of the broader collaboration market.

So how would you spend 3 BILLIONS DOLLARS IN CASH?

Chalk One Up for Office Depot

Interesting press release about retracting statement about Office Depot that we found on Yahoo.

  • Source: National Office Products Alliance (NOPA)
  • On Monday September 28, 2009, 10:28 am EDT
The National Office Products Alliance (NOPA) is retracting a statement that it issued in a July 21 press release in which it referenced the allegation it made to the California Attorney General of ‘kickbacks’ NOPA claimed were made to U.S. Communities. NOPA acknowledges it has no knowledge of ‘kickbacks’ being paid to U.S. Communities nor does NOPA have knowledge of any investigation of U.S. Communities as an organization. It regrets that its statements may have suggested otherwise.

Accordingly, NOPA has removed the July 21 release from its website, along with testimony of one of its directors in the California legislature on August 19 that also referred to ‘kickbacks.

Our comments:
This has been an interesting run on the Office Depot Stock in the past six months. Buy on bad news and sell on good news.

It All Starts in China - HP Patent infringement

More patent infringing cartridges have been flowing
into the US. First we hear of the Epson inkjet cartridges, now it's the Hewlett Packard 02 cartridges.  After reading the complaint, we noticed two companies in particular that have come up both lawsuits.  Mipo and Zhuhai Gree Magneto-Electric.  Let's take this one step further, Mipo has been selling the HP cartridges in question on Amazon, eBay and Craigslist.  C'mon Amazon fix your item file for inkjet and toner cartridges, you have way too many brands of compatible cartridges.

HEY AMAZON, A TIP HERE! - you might want to take those Mipo cartridges off of your website.

The Hewlett Packard 02 cartridges in question for the lawsuit are:

C8721W          C8730W
C8731W          C8732W
C8733W          C8734W
C8771W          C8772W
C8773W          C8774W
C8775W          C8719W
Plus all of the multi-packs

From the ITC 337 Law Blog
On September 23, 2009, Hewlett-Packard Co. (“HP”) of Palo Alto, California filed a complaint requesting that the ITC commence an investigation pursuant to section 337.

The complaint alleges that the following proposed respondents (collectively, “Respondents”) unlawfully import into the U.S., sell for importation, and sell within the U.S. after importation certain inkjet ink supplies and components thereof, which allegedly infringe HP’s U.S. Patent Nos. 6,959,985; 7,104,630; 6,089,687; and 6,264,301 (“the asserted patents”):

* Zhuhai Gree Magneto-Electric Co., Ltd. of China
* of Canoga Park, California
* Mipo International Ltd. of Hong Kong
* Mipo America of Miami, Florida
* Shanghai Angel Printer Supplies Co. Ltd. of China
* SmartOne of Hayward, California
* Shenzhen Print Media Co., Ltd. of China
* Comptree of City of Industry, California
* Zhuhai National Resources and; Jingjie Imaging Products Co., Ltd. of China
* Tatrix International of China
* Ourway Image Co., Ltd. of China

According to the complaint, the asserted patents relate to specialized printing fluid containers. In particular, the inventions relate to printing fluid containers that have enhanced alignment and latching features, the ability to hold different volumes of ink, and the ability to electronically communicate with the overall printing system regarding the amount of ink remaining in the container.

HP discloses in the complaint that simultaneously with the filing of its ITC complaint, HP filed a complaint against Respondents in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, alleging infringement of the same four asserted patents.

HP further discloses in the complaint that on August 1, 2006, HP asserted two of the four patents that are asserted in the current complaint against parties other than Respondents, both at the ITC (Inv. No. 337-TA-581), and also in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The ITC investigation and the district court litigation both settled.

Regarding potential remedy, HP requests that the Commission issue a permanent general exclusion order, or in the alternative, a permanent limited exclusion order. Additionally, HP requests that the Commission issue cease and desist orders directed to all Respondents.

I wonder if they've checked those inkjet cartridges for lead???!!

Change in Distribution

We saw an interesting letter that was sent out to dealers.

Dear Valued Customer,

As you know Folex USA was closed down end of May 2005 and the business was taken over by the former President Peter Criddle who established his own company PC Imaging Supplies LLC, also based in Fairfield, N.J.

After over four years of handling the Folex business Peter Criddle has decided to pursue other business interests, but in order to continue the excellent customer service and supply of quality Folex products, Folex and PC Imaging Supplies have worked hard to transfer the business to a new distribution partner:

As of September 18, 2009 the Folex business in USA and Canada will be handled by:

Coastal Business Supplies
St Louis, MO
Phone: 314-447-2100 or 800-562-7760
Fax: 636-537-5501

Also, your existing phone/fax contacts for PC Imaging Supplies are being transferred to Coastal and will still apply.

Coastal has been in business for 20 years and has a long business relationship with Folex. We are convinced that the Folex business will be in very good hands. Please be patient with us during this transition period; PC Imaging and Coastal staffs are working closely together to fulfill your needs. Coastal will contact you directly in the next days to introduce themselves and let you know the relevant contact persons.

To assist in the smooth transition we would ask you to place any new orders to the account of Coastal Business Supplies from now on, however, payment of invoices dated September 14th, 2009 or before should still be made out to PC Imaging Supplies, LLC at the usual address.

On behalf of PC Imaging Supplies and the staff, Peter would like to thank you most sincerely for your support and trust over the last four and a half years.

We hope that you will pay Coastal the same loyalty as you did Folex and PC Imaging over all these years and we are sure that you will not be disappointed.

We are looking forward to a fruitful cooperation again and remain.

And the Battle Continues - Nu-Kote & Office Depot

Nukote International, Inc. filed a lawsuit against Office Depot in Nashville’s U.S. Bankruptcy Court to tune of $217 million stating “egregious fraudulent misrepresentations and breaches of contract” in which Nukote lays the blame of their second Chapter 11 filing in the company’s history squarely on the shoulders of Office Depot.

This past May Nukote and Office Depot severed their 20 year vendor/retailer relationship despite consistent assurances from senior representatives at Office Depot that the relationship with Nukote was secure. The vendor/retailer contract was not due for renewal until July 2010. Nukote had once provided Office Depot with an estimated $85 million in product annually. In the lawsuit Nukote claims Office Depot had not paid them as consistently as they had in the past, then forced Nukote into a bidding war to keep Office Depot’s business. The delay of payments, time and money spent on the bidding war that ultimate resulted in the loss of Office Depot’s business “brought the Debtor (Nukote) to its knees” financially.

Office Depot responded to the filing in a statement which said "Nukote was significantly past due on amounts owed to Office Depot and, in fact, Office Depot still holds a significant receivable balance for Nukote. Indeed, it is not Office Depot that is indebted to Nukote, but it is Nukote that is indebted to Office Depot."

The statement further says that Office Depot did not breach any contracts with Nukote by changing suppliers. Office Depot claims Nukote stopped shipping product and "This interruption in service caused Office Depot to experience low inventory and out-of-stocks, and ultimately required Office Depot to quickly ramp up inventory with alternate suppliers". The response goes on to say "Office Depot intends to vigorously defend against Nukote's allegations and monetary demands. Further, Office Depot fully intends to seek reimbursement for the amounts Nukote owes to Office Depot."

So I say lean back, kick your feet up and watch the battle rage on in what is sure to be a lengthy fist fight in which no winner may ultimately claim victory. At least it makes for juicy office products industry gossip!

This is our opinion of what actually is happened.

Many years ago in a land far, far away Office Depot investigated their viability in the compatible toner and inkjet cartridge business. NuKote proved they were Office Depot's solution to this notion and won the business with set contract-pricing, rebate dollars and co-op dollars. The years go by and Office Depot's employee turn over, increasing pressure to source lower priced product coupled with shrinking margins squeeze Nukote into a no-win situation.

Fast forward to early this year: Office Depot wants their rebate dollars but NuKote doesn't want to pay because they've discounted their product so far below contract prices it makes them ineligible for rebate dollars (unless they give it away for free). Office Depot says "No...!" we want our rebate dollars or we'll take the money from our payables to you. Now Nukote is being short paid on outstanding invoices. Subsequentially Nukote starts to see the writing on the wall with their bank and the serious decline in A/R from Office Depot. Pushed to the brink, Nukote files for protection in bankruptcy court. And inside bankruptcy, Nukote files claim against Office Depot for $217 million in damages putting the blame for their second Chapter 11 filing in the history of the company squarely on the shoulders of Office Depot.

Heavens, how'd we get here! Pause and take a breath! Imagine if the top dogs of both companies sat down face to face, human being to human being and talked it out. Could things have been salvaged? Would both companies have to be in such horrendous situations today? Who knows because obviously egos got in the way. So where are we in present day? Well, there's a full fledged dog fight happening to determine who's responsible for who did what to who and how much its all worth. More to come as it unfolds.

So who did wrong, Office Depot or Nukote?

3M mPro110 - Upgraded to mPro120

3M has recently announced and are ready to roll out its second generation mini projectors. The 3M MPro120 mini projector which is a replacement for the 3M MPro110 that was introduced about this same time last year will have a few enhanced features. The new features are extended battery life, extended lamp life and stereo speakers.

The 3M Pro120 incorporating the new MM200 projection engine probably will hit the streets on the US market late September as there a few thousand units of the 3M MPro110 are still in the channel.

3M MPro 120 Specs
  • Integrated flip stand and tripod
  • Projection Brightness: 12 lumens of brightness
  • VGA resolution: 640 x 480 resolution
  • Projection size: 8 and 50 inches large
  • Projection Ratio: 4:3 aspect ratio
  • Battery Life: 2-4 hours
  • Projection Engine: MM200

Personally, if I needed a pocket projector right now, I would buy the 3M Pro110 from Amazon for $199, than rather pay $349.00 for the upgrade version.
