The Good, The Bad and the Wow

Interesting read about HP's revenue numbers from Channel Web about their rumoured decline in revenue (The Bad), rumour that GP dollars didn't decline at the same rate (The Good for HP). The WOW, some dealers are having an increase in HP sales.

Wondering why and how?

These VAR's are Selling solutions, Cost Savings and Return on Investments, not just printers and supplies. These dealers understand the Lifetime Value of a Customer.

Hint, Hint.......MPS bandwagon...

Calculating page coverage for Color Laser Printers

It can be a difficult task to calculate printing costs, much less to calculate the coverage on toner usage on a page unless you utilize technology. There are sample copies of pages with estimated page coverage to calculate page yield. But they all vary in colors, text and pictures, but do they actual mimic what your actual business printing needs?

Typically a manufacturer of color printer toner cartridge estimates the page yield of 5%. Do you actually think this is in the real world?

How about those PowerPoint presentation you printed. Most presentations page coverage is about 75%. How about those flyers you print, print coverage can be up to 50%.

Do the math here for a presentation printout - 50% compared to the 5% that a manufacturer leads you to believe. Your costs per print, just went up 10 fold.

So we have found the perfect tool to try and estimate your actual page coverage as your are ready to print.

software here.

So which is it? Qube or Cube?

Xerox just recently released the Color Qube Inkstick printer which is pretty fast printer and supposedly has a low cost TCO.

But we still have a hard time understanding their marketing. So what is the real name of this new Xerox printer?

We have found both names on the Xerox website, Xerox ColorCube and Xerox ColorQube.

With "Google Suggest" for the keywords "Xerox Color Qube", you get this:

Did you mean: Xerox Color Cube

But on the flip-side, for the keywords, "Xerox Color Cube" Xerox is paying for this keyword in their Google AdWords.

Now the real confusing part of this, the spec page of Xerox's web site for these printers, they call these new machines ColorQube.

At the same time on Xerox's website, they are running a sweepstakes for the Color Qube, the page with official rules for the sweepstake, has Color Cube with the trademark.

Our Guess is ColorQube......not ColorCube

It happens to the best of us! Google Goes Down Today

I am in no way comparing us to Google.

But when I was trying to get my email from my G-Mail account I was encountering problems - No Messages. It had the look and feel that I lost my network connection. My browser was stuck. So after the due diligence of checking my wireless connections, checking different machines, different network connections and virus protection I still couldn't connect to Google.

Hmmm... The perplexing computer system.

Come to find out Google had a little oops today. Yes on May 14th, 2009 Google was down for about 45 minutes. Did you notice it? I sure did....

What happened is when they identify a malicious site and ban them from being presented, they put them in a malicious website database in Google. That's when a little human error came into play. A typo! A simple back-slash instead of a forward slash created this little blip in Google. So all sites with this typo got the blackout effect and couldn't connect. A human typo created this blackout in Google accounts. I guess the right type of slash in the malicious database is a very important thing in the Google database, if not, Oops.

But been there, done that, typo's happen. So have my freinds at Kyocera and Taskalfa or Taskafla. No big deal, everything is working fine now.

Xerox introducing what they call new technology at a cost effective business model. For them or the end-user? Personally I would check my page coverage before I hit the print button with the Page Coverage Estimator Software. It's free to download.

We checked on which gets searched more often for this new printer - Color Cube or Color Qube.

The winner is Color Cube.

Here are the specs for the new Xerox Printers.

How do you actually calculate page coverage for Inkjet Printers?

It can be a complicated task to calculate printing costs, much less to calculate the coverage on ink on a page unless you utilize technology. There are sample copies of pages with estimated page coverage to calculate page yield. Reverse Vending Machines for Recycling

From Gizmodo - So when are these machines going to be available for inkjet toner cartridge recycling.

I've always been comfortable with humans' relationship with vending machines: we feed them money, they feed us high-fructose corn syrup, everyone's happy. Envirobank wants to upset this age-old ritual with their "reverse vending machines".

The pitch: these boxes, fashioned like regular ol' vending machines, will eat, clean and smush your recyclable empties, rewarding you for your good deed with coupons, cash credit or vouchers for nearby stores. Your good deed, of course, was that you a) recycled a plastic bottle and b) watched a targeted advertisement on the machine's LCD screen. As of last week, they've been deployed in a few locations in Envirobank's native Australia, but only on a trial basis.

Evirobank claims the machines not only encourage recycling, but reduce carbon emissions by preparing the empties for direct shipment to a recycling depot, bypassing waste processing facilities altogether. I'm not sure that building a massive machine, replete with screens, processors, motors and pumps, results in a net decrease in emissions compared to driving some bottles around, but their hearts are in the right place, and 'details' like that tend to be ignored anyway.

Print from a Blackberry, by HP

Similar to the iPhone application, now you can print to any printer from your Blackberry.

Hewlett-Packard and Research In Motion announced on Monday a partnership for enterprise clients that incorporates the newly released BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 software and a print service.

HP CloudPrint for BlackBerry Smartphones, a Web-based technology slated to be shown at this week's Wireless Enterprise Symposium in Orlando, Fla., lets users print e-mails, photos, documents, and Web pages from their BlackBerrys to the nearest printer, regardless of the printer manufacturer.

"The service is printer-agnostic and driverless, and requires simple Internet access," HP said in a statement.

HP Operations Manager for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, also released Monday, is designed to enable companies to monitor and manage their BlackBerry enterprise environment. Managed BlackBerry Services, meanwhile, enables IT managers to outsource support of the BlackBerry environment to EDS Mobile Workplace Services, HP said.

"RIM and HP are working together to deliver solutions to customers that weave mobility into their daily operations--from innovative new services in the cloud to managed mobile services for the enterprise," Jim Balsillie, co-chief executive officer of Research In Motion, said in a statement. "Through our collaboration with HP, businesses will have access to an expanded set of applications and services for their BlackBerry smartphone deployments."

Sayonara - Well Kinda!

Office Depot seems to be going down with a fight - Closing all of their stores in Japan to cut costs.

TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Office Depot Inc. plans to close all of its stores in Japan by the end of this year because of intense price competition, according a Nikkei newspaper report.
Office Depot's subsidiary in Japan has so far closed eight stores this year, with the other 20 expected to close by the end of the year, the Nikkei reported Sunday.
Office Depot was cited as saying the closures will cost about $13 million.
Office Depot Japan Ltd. opened its first store in 1997. The subsidiary will reportedly continue its mail-order and online sales and soon sell other private-brand goods now marketed overseas.
It also intends to sell private-brand goods to major supermarket chains, the report said.
