So here are the instructions on how to scan an 11 x 17 document on the Brother MFC-6490:

To scan a Legal, Ledger, A3 or A4 size document, you need to change the Glass ScanSize setting.

• The default setting is Letter.
• Press the (Scan) button
• Press up arrow or down arrow to select Scan to Media
• Press OK
• Press up arrow or down arrow to choose Glass ScanSize
• Press right or left arrow to choose Letter, Legal, Ledger, A3 or A4
• Select the A4 size
• Press OK

You can save the default scanning of the Brother MFC-6490 to what size you use most often by following the instructions on page 121 from the Brother manual.

Note - This setting is only available for scanning documents from the scanner glass.
